Makers say chip deficit can raise electronics prices in Russia

MOSCOW, Feb 16 (PRIME) – Russia’s electronics prices can rise because of temporary deficit of chips caused by a slowdown in logistic production chains amid the coronavirus pandemic, higher demand, and trade wars, spokespeople for the local producers of microelectronics and electronics told PRIME on Tuesday.

GS Nanotech General Director Oleg Kim said that the deficit was provoked by all the leading electronics makers.

“They accumulate stocks in their warehouses in the wake of experience of the first wave of the 2020 pandemic, when the industry faced of deficit in components although the top chip makers did not halt their production. The resulting avalanche of orders was the main reason for the shortage of components,” he said.

Kim said the deficit will most likely remain in 2021, but the market will adapt to the situation.

Experts told PRIME earlier that prices of electronics have increased by 5 to 20% since the beginning of the year, depending on the type of goods, because of the lack of main components. Media reported that foreign car makers also had problems with microchip supplies.
